It is impossible for anyone to think of US Airways without first thinking of the near-disaster that is now best known as the “Miracle on the Hudson”. It was US Airways flight 1549 that on January 15, 2009 had to ditch into the Hudson River in New York after a bird strike took out both of the A320’s engines. Captain Scully and his crew managed to save the lives of everyone onboard that flight along with the help of a few local commercial vessels who helped bring the passengers and crew to safety before the aircraft sunk.
Founded in 1939 as All-American Airways, the airline went through major changes over the years before becoming officially known as US Airways in 1997. They offer more than 3000 flights per day spread across more than 10 destinations around the world. US Airways is also a member of the Star Alliance™ which offers well over 1,000 destinations to their passengers.
It’s no surprise that the Miracle on the Hudson resulted in various awards and recognition for the crew, but US Airways has been winning awards for their commitment to service and safety since day one. They have been awarded the Diamond Award from the Federal Aviation Administration for Maintenance Training Excellence for its Charlotte, NC hub’s maintenance facility for the 11th year in a row.
