Solomons Airlines was established and incorporated in the year 1962 by Laurie Crowley and was initially called Megapode Airlines. Once Macair decided to purchase Megapode Airlines in the 1968, the name of the airline was changed to Solomons Island Airlines. They changed hands again in 1975 when purchased by Talair and were eventually purchased by the government which led to a slow and steady growth of the airline.
Sadly Solomons Airlines has been plagued by bad luck after falling on hard times after a civil war and continuing to struggle as a result of the economic downturn and the financial state of the airline industry overall. As such they have had to downsize and streamline their operations in order to stay efficient. Their fleet now consists of one Boeing 737-300 which is ‘damp leased’ to the airline. They also own 3 De Havilland Twin Otter aircraft and one Brit Norman Islander. The airline now offers service domestically within all of the Solomon Islands as well as international flights to Australia, Fiji and Vanuatu.
This small carrier offers online booking via their new website as well as a variety of other services including assistance for special needs passengers, duty free shopping and complimentary access to the Air New Zealand Business Class lounge at the Brisbane airport and the Tabua Club Lounge at Nadi International Airport.
