Northwest Airlines was recently acquired by Delta Airlines, both reputable North American airlines. The acquisition of Northwest by Delta was not the first time Northwest was a part of a merger. For instance, in 1993, a strategic alliance with KLM was put in place to expand the service area of Northwest. Due to improving technology and a focus on reducing costs, Northwest enjoyed high profits during the 2000s. Northwest was also the first to offer Internet check-in for passengers. They also refused to adopt the fare increases that were happening throughout the North American airline industry.
Delta, as a result of the merger with Northwest, is now the largest airline in the world with 368 destinations worldwide with a staggering 170 million passengers per year. They are also a member of SkyTeam which combined with their own flights offers passengers almost 600 destinations around the globe. With the merger also comes and expansion of fleet which currently boasts more than 1,000 airplanes in service.
Passengers looking to book a flight with Northwest or simply looking to get in touch with NWA will now be directed to the Delta website where the flights have been combined to the one carrier.
