The airline once had a much larger fleet for both domestic, international and cargo travel services. In January of 2009, the CEO of Air Jamaica (Bruce Nobles) announced cutbacks to staff, routes and the fleet.
The airline reduced the size of fleet by more than 50%, returning aircraft to lien-holders and retired older aircraft from the fleet. The total retired fleet of Air Jamaica since its inception in 1969 totals almost 70. The reduced fleet currently in operation totals 9 aircraft, all of which are Airbus models. 7 of the 9 aircraft are Airbus A320-214's. In February of 2010, the airline announced it will reduce the size of its fleet again down to six aircraft in the near future.
Unlike many of the major airlines, Air Jamaica has had zero fatalities despite the large number of international flights that have occurred between Miami, New York and the Caribbean.
